After two defeats in the election for Governor of Washington State, one of which was among the closest elections in US history, Dino Rossi has decided to run for different office. Instead of gunning for the top spot in Olympia, he instead is aiming to unseat incumbent Democrat Patty Murray. Murray’s counterpart within the US Senate, Maria Cantwell, is also a Democrat. That said, the Washington State Senate election Dino Rossi is trying to win is months away, and the Washington State primaries are yet to conclude.
Dino Rossi has the resume
This won’t be the first foray into politics for Dino Rossi. Rossi served within the Senate of Washington State before his two runs for governor. While serving in that capacity from 1997 to 2003, Rossi was known for being able to cooperate with Democrats. He was able to get a budget passed without needing to raise taxes for a payday advances for the state, eliminating a $ 3 billion spending budget deficit. Current Secretary of Commerce and then Governor Gary Locke sang his praises for that monumental task.
Two tight losses
Dino ran twice against Christine Gregoire for Governor of Washington State after Gary Locke left office. The first contest was one of the slimmest election victories in American electoral history. Rossi had really appeared to have barely won, but a mandatory recount showed Gregoire leading by only 133 votes. The next election pitted the two against each other again, and Gregoire won by a slightly wider margin.
Incumbent Democrats are in many people’s crosshairs
Lately, a swath of Republicans are trying to oust Democrats within the US House and Senate. He could have a chore on his hands, as Patty Murray has served within the United States Senate for three terms. He also has other challengers in the Primary to overcome. One of his challengers, Chris Didier, is a former NFL player and Super Bowl champion with the Sarah Palin endorsement. Washington State is thought of as blue, though the bulk of the territory of the state votes Republican.
