The rape problem in South Africa
CIET Africa, a non-governmental organization, conducted a survey ten years ago that revealed the shocking truth about rape crimes in South Africa. One in each and every three women questioned within the survey said they had been a victim of rape over the past year. More than 50,000 cases are reported to authorities each year, according to BBC News. However, that figure is only a taste of the actual number of assaults against women in South Africa.
The latex condom with teeth
The latex condom with teeth is inserted by women just like tampons, reports CNN. Upon penetration, the rows of jagged teeth-like hooks lined inside the machine latches on to a man’s penis. Once the system is firmly hooked on, only a specialized doctor can remove it, said Ehlers. She hopes it will help cut back the increasing number of sex molesters in the nation.
“It hurts, he cannot pee and walk when it’s on,” said Ehlers. “If he tries to remove it, it will clasp even tighter… however, it doesn’t break the skin, and there’s no danger of fluid exposure.”
Efforts to cut down on sexual violence
Dr. Sonnet Ehlers is planning to distribute 30,000 of the female condoms with teeth — Rape-aXe — for free. Once the trial period is over, the latex system could be sold for $ 2 apiece. Ehlers, a mother of two, said she even visited several prisons to speak to convicted rapists to find out whether such a preventative tool would have made them reconsider their actions.
